I know this because it was never enough for me either.
I started my photography business in 2010 as a way to make a little extra money. I started out charging $150 a session. Yep, that wasn’t a typo, I was practically giving my work away because I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to book at a higher rate. When you believe you won’t have enough, this is called a scarcity mindset. Ever heard the phrase “You are what you eat?” I always disliked that phrase for a number of reasons but I believe more in “you are what you THINK.”
Mindset is everything in your work and how you operate your business. When our inner dialog consists of “I can’t charge those prices, I’ll never book enough clients” or “I love this photographers work, I’ll never book cool clients like that.” Then guess what happens… you never will.
No, mediocrity was never your thing. I know you my friend, you dream of creating work that is unapologetically you. The kind of work that screams you. Everything you desire in your life is already yours. The first step you need to take is to state what is yours and be brave enough to claim it.
“Destiny is a feeling you have that you know something about yourself nobody else does. The picture you have in your own mind of what you're about will come true.”
— Bob Dylan
YEAR 01
Quit my 9 to 5 to start my dream career as a wedding and family photographer. Had no idea what I was doing. I ran it off sheer excitement and learning from the 1000+ mistakes I encountered through trial and error.
YEAR 05
I got burnt out saying yes to too many things and decided to lean into what made me happy to photograph. I made a conscious effort to get rid of anything that didn’t resonate. Family, Couples, and weddings stayed- birthday parties, school photography and posed newborns were cut.
YEAR 06
I fell head over heels in love with teaching. I made an online family class. I found out I really enjoyed public speaking and connecting with other creatives and I started speaking at conferences and workshops. This year I also began traveling for shoots and weddings.
YEAR 11
My business survived a worldwide pandemic which was one of the hardest years for self employed creatives.
I launched my online platform for photographers spring of 2021, which was a longtime vision that came to fruition.
