Shadow & Light Workshop

I used to avoid using created light at all costs. I hid behind the label “Natural Light Photographer” as some sort of badge of honor, but really I was completely intimidated by it.

Here is the thing though, learning how to use and manipulate artificial light is actually not hard at all. I finally surrendered any preconceived notions I had and let myself completely dive in head first into learning. Not only has it completely enhanced my work it's also made me a more confident photographer. Being able to create any light, create any mood, anywhere anytime is absolutely the most freeing thing as an artist.

This is exactly why I created Shadow & Light Workshop. I want you to have the confidence to photograph in natural light and created light so you can focus on photographing what you love.

I hosted the first Shadow & Light Workshop in Sacramento California at the stunning WKND Studio. I intentionally chose a studio with absolutely no natural light so that students could completely immerse themselves in the world of created light.

What better way to learn something new than to eliminate the security blanket?

Prior to this workshop I saw these creative photos and thought “I can’t do that” and yet - I can!!

The first shoot was focused on posing & directing couples. We used a continuous light source by Nanlite so that all students could shoot at the same time. Shooting with continuous light during the posing/directing portion of the workshop allowed everyone the mental space to not have to think of too many new things at once.

For the second shoot, we dove in to how to use flash/strobes.

Profoto provided all the Connect Pro Triggers so that everyone could have hands on experience using strobes.

We played with the Profoto A2 Monolights and the Profoto Clic Color Effect Gels together with some Atmosphere Aerosol to create mood and atmosphere.

Experiencing Chloe’s guidance was nothing short of inspiring. Her approach is not just about skill; it’s about being relatable and fun, and having a clear creative direction. She is a true master of her craft. I have already begun implementing her teachings into my own work.

The final shoot we used the Nanlite FS-60b and projection mount to create a spotlight effect. Our models are musicians and I was inspired to create images that reflected their story as a couple.

Each session was thoughtfully designed to provide a comprehensive overview of the different lighting aspects. I appreciated how Chloe took the time to explain complex concepts in a simple and easy-to-understand manner.
